You say this without providing a single reason. Do you also believe that females who choose male characters have problems?

I, and no doubt many others, would like to hear real reasons.

nice twist on things sporto. u dont need to be into cybering, which i most certainly am not, to be curious why males like to roleplay as females.

I applaud you for your incredibly mature and well thought out reply..I especially liked the list of reasons to support your claim...Keep up the good work.

(If you were being sarcastic, as I hope you were...erm, so was I? )

It was more the fact that he lied to me almost every day for six months..wouldn't you be a little angry if someone did that to you?

I couldn't care less whether the person sitting at the keyboard is male or female, as long as they are honest about who they are.

It definitely explains his irrational fear of Teamspeak though..

well since i started playing this game, i have not had a single person say any lewd comment towards me. I have only had one person ask me if I was a male and I said yes. he said..."cool" we quested and that was that. no big deal at all. Again I have to say its just a game.

I have one Female Charactor. I like the varity. Though i have heard of Everquest geek's who are male, but pretend they are female to get free stuff .... and that my freind is sad indeed.

And i do hafta question why a male would play a charactor named "mistress Sunshine" or other rediclous names, when a female name like Viona or Mystra would do.

ive asked a few "males" why they play females and the one constant answer is that they "like to look at them." while i admit the female characters, like much of the scenery, are atheistically pleasing, i find it rather desperate that males would create a female character just to stare at its cartoon booty in combat. i mean, if u like the female form, fine, meet some real life girls and stare at them.

freedom of expression is great, but man is it creepy when a half-naked female character called Princess Angel chats with me and i find out its a 37 year old male plumber from jersey.

unless one of you girly-boys sets the record straight (pun intended), the obvious choices for a conclusion are:

1. GW has a ton of virtual pervs
2. GW has a ton of closet dwellers
3. Kurt Cobain was right......everyone is gay

Bram (plz, call me princess)

LMFAO!!!! My own reason has no relation to the 3 implications you listed. Mine is pure, 100% beer-guzzling redneck American: I like watching my own ass while I run around.

LMFAO!!!!

Well my main char (R/W) is male (like me in rl) but I've made my new E/M female because I simply didn't like the looks of the male Elementalists.
I don't go around pretending to be a female, flirt with guys or any of that twisted stuff but it's simply because I dislike the looks of the male version.

Oh btw SOT, you have a girl's ass then?

Haha, its funny that just playing a female character in game will get you free items. But who is the geek there really? the guy doing the con or the guy trying to impress the virtual lady with gifts?

Seriously, its pretty sad what guys will do to get the attention of a "female sprite" in online games. Before GW I was playing on an RO server. Whenever a new person who presents themselves as female appear on the forums, all the guys start trying to get her attention by giving her free stuff, free tankings, etc.

My friend wanted to see how desperate these people are, and pretended to be a female sprite, and eventually even got access to accounts and passwords! (These were really REALLY good accounts too)

Anywayz, there's nothing wrong with playing female characters as a guy. I do it because the male elementalist dance is just too fruity for me. Also, for some reason when I talk on-line, a lot of people assume I'm female for some reason =/, so if I'm using a male sprite, a lot of people say I talk like a girl...

Finally, I think the people who willingly give items and free stuff to "supposed" female players are the more questionable ones =P

I'm a man (according to my birth certificate) and I'm playing Guild Wars for a week now and have two characters, both female. There are a couple of reasons why I do this.....
First: Some classes just look better when their from one specific gender. I've got a female mesmer and necromancer, but my warrior will be a male. It just looks good.
Second: I'm a male (according to my birth certificate) in real life. Why not throw a little variety in with the mix?
Last: Eurhm.....why not?
And I must say that I never look at their pixilated behinds, not even when they look really nice.

On my in-game character, ya gimpy

I am a happily married, well-adjusted 26 year old male who is tired of the Def Leapord and Type O Negative Lookalike male avatars in the game, that's all

I can see both sides of this debate..

On the one side, its a game and you can pick whatever sex you want as your character... but

On the other side, its a social norm that males choose male characters when they play and women choose female characters when they play. Just like girls play with barbie dolls and boys play with GI Joes. Just like men wear shorts and pants and women wear skirts and dresses. Girl babies get pink rooms and male babies get blue rooms. Its just the way the world works - and it works that way because its best that way, otherwise it would be different. Of course there are reasons to stray from the norm, but generally, there is a norm for some reason.

I dont understand why a male would choose a female to play in an mmorpg (unless he were gay or wanted to be a female in RL). Everyone understands that sex in game is assumed as sex out of game. Though it is a game, it is real life. You do not leave the real world when you sit down and play GW. You are still living and breathing. You are spending valuable hours of your life playing this game. Yes, its a game, but its still real life. People interact in the game and sex does play a factor.

You get no bonus based on sex in this game. People will choose different clasess (monk v ranger) for example because it affects the way your character performs. Sex has no effect.

One of the main reasons is to say you like the way the cartoon looks because its female, and this is sort of ridiculous to me. Based on this theory you should yourself become a woman, that way you could look at yourself all day long. OR, you could just put a picture of a hot chick near your computer to look at. But, come on, looking at the female character cannot have THAT much of an affect. You are more looking at your enemiese and your skill bar and health bar than avatars.

I firmly believe if a male chooses a female character in THIS game (as there are no bonuses what-so-ever [unless you are a merchant]), then that male is either homo or bi sexual, very effeminate, or immature.

(Sorry, I had to be the devil's advocate here)

Enjoy flaming this response!

I'm very sorry to have to rip apart your post from a single sentence, but it's the very thing which demolishes your entire argument from the ground up.

It's a social norm, yes. RPGs are not social in the real sense of the word, they're shared entertainment. Social rules do not apply in an RPG, simply by the definition of roleplaying.

I'm not being rude, it's just the facts which make this entire "male must play male and female must play female" point of view silly.

LOL. I figured he played a Ranger. Guess I'm a bit slow . I just *assume* everyone playing is a white male in RL, and plays what looks good to *them*. On the (rare) occasions the person behind the avatar turns out to be female instead, it's usually just a pleasant suprise. Why? Because they are usually actually *playing the game!*
If you have a problem (or, probably, even a question about) with the RL gender behind someone else's avatar, you should probably talk to your therapist about it. If you want to know my RL sex and who I'm sleeping with, you'd better have a damn good reason.
It would be fun to see how many of the homophobic questions/answers are coming from the US as opposed to the rest of the world.

Not exactly flaming, just disagreeing.

I'm not homo or bi sexual, you could ask my girlfriend but take my word for it.
When I look at a man or woman in a game I don't look at how good they look, but how good the character model looks. This is one mistake your making, it's not real life, they're not real people. They're just character models and one looks better then the other. Like I said before, I'll pick a male character for a warrior because it looks better. But I think the mesmer female looks better then the male memsmer.

You shouldn't be mistaken people who pose as females when they're actually male for the guys who play an ORG with a female character model because they think it looks good.
